When WinMX is ready to search and download files, its connection status stops blinking and turns green. You should select your connection type as a primary connection to the network if you have cable modem, DSL, or faster T1 or T3 networks. Otherwise, if you are a dial-up user or your computer is behind a firewall (even if you are on a fast connection like DSL or cable), the default connection type is to make a secondary connection. Here you can change your screen name to anything you like by clicking on the Change button. In the following example, the screen name is linux480. This is the network name other users will see.

We need to do some initial settings once, so the connection is optimized for the network speed we are using. Click on Setting to bring up the following screen. Your network environment settings can be changed at any time using the Setting option. However, it may be easier and more complete for first-time users to use the Setup Wizard... option so that important or required configuration parameters are entered correctly.

WinMX displays the following prompt to confirm changes to the current settings. We need to select Yes to clear all existing configuration parameters. If later on, we want to go back and update certain configuration parameters only, select No to keep other parameters unchanged.
