It is time to do some searching. Click "Open New Search" and type in the name
of the artist or the song/movie you want to look for. This example searches for
available songs by "Jennifer Lopez". Remember to click on audio for music search,
video for movie search. If you want to look for certain file types, click on the
button currently shown "MP3 Audio - Any Bitrate" for a drop-down list box for
more options and select the one you want. You should be patient and just wait for a few seconds. WinMX shows a list of currently available files from other users to download. You can then select the desired file which is available and right click to download as following.

File. This column shows the files whose names contain your search string. The file name may not indicate the actual contents of the file since there are a lot of fake files on peer-to-peer file-sharing networks. Bytes. The file size in bytes helps to determine if this is the potential correct file to download. A music or video file with a small file size is a good candidate for an incomplete or corrupted file. Time. The duration of a song is shown in this column if available. Bitrate. This is the MP3 bitrate. The higher the bitrate, the better the audio quality at the expense of larger file size and longer download time. Frequency. Audio sampling frequency. The most common values are 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz. User. This is the screen name of other users who are offering files to download. You can select a user and right click to display the context menu to access other options regarding this user (Browse, Add to Hotlist, Whois, Send Message, and Chat). These options are explained later in subsequent pages. Speed. This is the connection speed of the user who is offering the files to download. Typical connection speeds are DSL, cable modem, 56K dial-up, etc. Ping. This is how long it takes to send and get back a short message to this user. Status/Server. The download status is either "available", or "in queue". You can start the download of the file if the status is "available". Otherwise, your download request is entered into a queue and you have to wait. The number in the queue indicates how many users are currently ahead of you and are currently waiting. If you decide to enter a queue, you may have to wait from a few hours to several days, or not at all if the file you want to download is popular. The download tips toward the end of the guide show several ways to improve the chance to get your downloaded files.
