Downloading Tips
You may have achieved better results and a more satisfying downloading experience if you are willing to experiment with the following recommendations:

1. You should have something to share.
This is probably the most difficult part for the first-time file-sharing user. If you offer nothing and expect other users to give you their files, sooner or later you will be placed on their ignored list. So think of something to offer, whether it is music (mp3 files), video (avi or mpg files), or software (zip or rar files). If you do have something to offer, try to package each individual file in the most compact format and have a good description for the file. If you absolutely have nothing to start out, try not to be too greedy and exercise patience. You can get a few music files at a time to build up your collection of shared files. Wait a few weeks for your shared files to accumulate and then try to get better files or the files you really want to have. Starting out with music files often yields frustrating results compared to having a few video files to offer. So it might be best if you can convert some popular full- length DVD movies into DivX format with available freeware tools. One good DivX movie often takes approximately one CD storage (600-700 MBs) and is much more attractive than hundreds of music tracks.

2. You should never queue more than 2 files from any one user.
The upper limit can be set with Settings/File Transfer/Queuing option explained previously. Asking too many files from the same user may put you on their ignored list fast.

3. You should never send a message to ask someone to start your download.
This may work in some rare cases but most likely your message will never be read or worse, your screen name is inserted into the ignored list.

4. There are many reasons for a file not to get downloaded or the download seems never get completed. The following conditions are most likely to occur.

Timed out...
This is mostly caused by a bad connection. Just be patient and try again at different time of day.

File/user unavailable...
This can be caused by the user you are trying to download to terminate his/her WinMX. This can also mean that the user has cancelled your download for whatever reasons.

5. You can create new files or resources to share.
Everyone will benefit and love you for doing this, whether the files are music, video, or software archives. There are many free programs you can use to create mp3 music or avi video files. You definitely should try not to offer something nobody wants like a library of wallpapers or personal photographs. If your files have valuable contents, you may even get offers to download from other users. This is known as trading, but you should be careful since the other users may get your completed files and you do not finish the downloading of the exchanged files.
