A group of related video titles makes a Video Title Set (VTS). A maximum of 99 VTSes are allowed on a DVD. Titles within a VTS have common video attributes such as display resolution and aspect ratio. Most video titles are protected by an encryption algorithm called CSS (Contents Scrambling System). Tools such as SmartRipper are capable of removing these encryption locks. The VTS which contains the main movie almost always has a VTS menu. This menu, also known as the root menu, offers navigation features such as chapter selection, audio and caption set up, and the selection of bonus features such as games, previews, etc.

Even though most video DVDs have almost
8 to 9 Gbytes of data, many VTSes which contain the
main movie are smaller than 4 Gbytes and
can be backed up on a single recordable DVD-R.

DVD-Replica can back up individual video titles,
individual VTS, and selected titles within a VTS
while preserving all menus and navigation features.

For lossless backup which retains the original video
and audio quality, a DVD-9 movie can be split to two
recordable discs automatically with a single click,
and the original menu works on both split discs.

If a video title is larger than 4.37 Gbytes, the video title can be split and backed up on two separate DVD-Rs. The user can select the split point at the end of any chapter in the video title. The user can decide to keep only the split VTS or to include all other VTSes from the source DVD on the second disc via the option "Keep VTS". The play back sequence for each backup disc can be kept unchanged (Start Normal), or to begin playback with the split VTS menu (Start with menu), or to begin playback with the split video title (Start with Title). The option "Auto Repeat" automatically starts playing back from the first chapter after the last chapter is finished.
