In this Adobe Photoshop tutorial, we're going to look at an easy way to adjust the depth of field in a photo, keeping only a small portion of the image in focus while taking the rest of it out of focus. This is a great way to bring attention to a specific part of an image (someone's face, for example), and the effect is similar to how things would look if we had shot the photo with a wide aperture. For best results, we'll be using Photoshop's Lens Blur filter to create this effect, which is available in Photoshop CS and later, which means you'll need at least Photoshop CS to follow along with this tutorial. If you're using Photoshop 7 or earlier, you can still achieve good results with Photoshop's classic Gaussian Blur filter, but the Lens Blur filter is the filter of choice for this effect because it tries to mimic how an actual camera lens works, whereas the Gaussian Blur filter simply blurs everything out.

In this Adobe Photoshop tutorial, we're going to look at a great way to create unique and interesting photo border effects by using other photos as displacement maps! Previously, we looked at how to create photo borders with masks and filters, which is an easy way to come up with interesting results simply by applying some of Photoshop's built-in filters to a layer mask. The downside to using that method though is that you're using the same filters every other Photoshop user has access to, which means you run the risk of creating the exact same border effects everyone else is creating. That may or may not be an issue for you, but the method we're going to look at here completely avoids that problem because it uses your own photos to create the effect, and since presumably you're the one who took your photos, you can use them to create photo borders that are as unique as you are!

In this Photoshop tutorial, we're going to learn how easy it is to turn any photo into an interesting background using a couple of basic selection tools in Photoshop that, quite honestly, seem to serve no other purpose other than helping us to create this effect. I'm talking about the Single Row Marquee Tool Single Column Marquee Tool, which by default are hiding behind the Rectangular Marquee Tool in the Tools palette.

In this Photoshop tutorial, we're going to learn how easy it is to add a fun and interesting border to a photo using nothing more than a simple layer mask and your choice of Photoshop filter. I say "your choice" because there's no shortage of filters to choose from in Photoshop and many of them are great for creating unique photo borders. We'll look at a few examples of ones that work really well, but you'll definitely want to experiment on your own with the various filters to see what sort of photo border effects you can come up with!

n this Photoshop tutorial, we're going to learn how easy it is to blend photos together using Photoshop's Apply Image command to give us all kinds of different results and effects. Basically, Apply Image allows us to blend, or "apply", a layer and channel from one image with a layer and channel of another image. It's similar to using layer blend modes to blend layers together in the Layers palette, with the added ability to blend individual channels together as well. This not only gives us much more control over how the images are blended, but also opens up far more creative possibilities and gives us better overall results.

In this Adobe Photoshop tutorial, we're going to look at how easy it is to give a photo rounded corners. As with most things in Photoshop, there's about 17 different ways to create rounded corners, but we're going to make things interesting by looking at a way to do it using something in Photoshop that many people don't even know about - vector masks! What's a vector mask? Well, if you think layer masks are fun (you do think layer masks are fun, right?), you're going to love vector masks.

In this Adobe Photoshop tutorial, we're going to learn how to easily make a photo look more like a watercolor painting. This photo effect works best on images where maintaining rich colors and strong contrast is more important than keeping any fine details, since you'll be losing a lot of detail with this effect. Creating the effect is as simple as duplicating some layers, applying a few filters, and using a few different layer blend modes, and the whole thing takes only a couple of minutes from start to finish.

In this Adobe Photoshop tutorial, we're going to learn how to create and then reuse a photo effect as a template using Smart Objects and Smart Filters. Smart Objects were first introduced in Photoshop CS2, and Photoshop CS3 takes them even further with Smart Filters. Both of these recent additions to Photoshop have the potential to completely change how you work inside the program, since they give you an amazing level of flexibility that simply doesn't exist without them.
